Before you book
Insurance stays, answered.
It pays for somewhere else to stay, such as a hotel or a rented house, while your home is repaired after major damage like a fire or flood. Check your own policy for what it covers and any limit.
The Financial Ombudsman is likely to treat a home as uninhabitable if it has no electricity or running water, no kitchen, bathroom or toilet, or is unsafe to live in. Stripped out floors can count when there are young children.
The ombudsman says a reasonable choice is usually a similar type of property that lets you carry on with work, school and everyday life. Insurers should weigh the distance to work, school, family and friends, the number of bedrooms, any medical needs and pets.
Cover usually lasts until your home is safe to live in again, up to your policy's limit. After a flood, the ABI says moving back can take between a few weeks and a year or more.
Some of our homes welcome pets. Choose Pets to see them. If your pet cannot be left alone, tell us before you book, as each home has its own house rules.
