Hitchin’s week is shared between London commuters, crews building new homes around the town and staff at Lister Hospital in Stevenage. Weekends bring the lavender fields at Ickleford, Knebworth and family visits. The big date to plan for is September 2027, when Oasis are due to play six nights at Knebworth Park.

North Hertfordshire Council has charged a 100% premium on second homes since 1 April 2026, on top of the normal bill, with some exceptions. A home that qualifies for business rates pays those instead.
We found no North Hertfordshire planning policy or Article 4 direction aimed at short lets. The council’s Article 4 directions stop shops, offices and other premises in the Hitchin, Letchworth, Baldock and Royston town centres being turned into homes without permission. Outside London, England has no general planning test for short lets yet.
