Construction crews

Medway Maritime Hospital
Medway NHS Foundation Trust, based in Gillingham, has more than 5,000 staff, making it one of Medway’s largest employers. It serves more than 427,000 people across Medway and Swale, with around 180,000 A&E attendances a year, so locums and agency staff need somewhere close by for weeks at a time.1
Lower Thames Crossing
National Highways’ new Thames tunnel would connect to the A2 and M2 in Kent. Planning permission was granted in March 2025, Europe’s largest tunnelling machine was chosen in July 2026, and a Highways Bill to bring in private investment went to Parliament in September 2026. Construction could start as early as 2026, with the road expected to open in the early 2030s.2,3
BAE Systems and Rochester Airport
BAE Systems, Medway’s largest private employer with 1,700 staff, is investing £220 million in a new factory north of Rochester Airport, expected to bring 300 more jobs over five years, with construction preparation under way. The airport site is also earmarked for Innovation Park Medway, a technology and engineering business park still at masterplan stage.4,5

Medway Council’s Rochester Riverside regeneration is building around 1,400 homes on former railway land by the river. Phases 1 to 3 have 243 homes occupied and a further 259 under construction, on an eight-year build-out.6
The Royal Engineers, the Dockyard and the universities
Brompton Barracks in Chatham has been the home of the Royal School of Military Engineering since 1812, training Royal Engineers in construction, engineering and watermanship. The Historic Dockyard Chatham is an 80-acre former naval yard with three historic warships, and a shared campus at Chatham Maritime brings the University of Kent, University of Greenwich and Canterbury Christ Church University together.7,8,9
