    Rhondda Cynon Taf has 332 disused coal tips, and the Welsh Government is funding maintenance on more than 400 tips across Wales from 2026 to 2029. In Aberdare, the council’s contractor started riverbank repairs by a former tip near Gadlys Pit Car Park in July 2026, due to finish in the autumn.1,2

  • Cynon Gateway link road and the A4059

    A planned 1.2km road will join the A4059 Aberdare bypass to the A465 between Llwydcoed and Penywaun. AtkinsRéalis was appointed in September 2025 to help deliver it, and more funding was secured in March 2026. Near Cwmbach, repairs to the Afon Cynon bridge run through 2026.3,4

  • Prince Charles Hospital

    Cwm Taf Morgannwg University Health Board serves 450,000 people across Rhondda Cynon Taf, Merthyr Tydfil and Bridgend. Its £300m redevelopment of Prince Charles Hospital in Merthyr Tydfil began in 2017 and is expected to run to 2028, so contractors, locums and agency staff need somewhere close.5,6

  • Hirwaun Industrial Estate

    In March 2026 the Welsh Government announced up to £9.25 million to buy and refurbish Unit 1 on Hirwaun Industrial Estate, to bring manufacturers to the Heads of the Valleys. The unit is a 97,300 sq ft building with six acres of land.7
