The Royal Harbour and the port
Ramsgate is the UK’s only Royal Harbour, run by Thanet District Council, and the Port of Ramsgate is the operations base for the London Array, a 175-turbine offshore wind farm.
QEQM Hospital, Margate
East Kent Hospitals serves around 700,000 people. Its Queen Elizabeth The Queen Mother Hospital in Margate, a short drive from Ramsgate, has an emergency department and a maternity unit.

Council tax in Ramsgate
Thanet District Council has charged a 100% premium on furnished homes that are nobody’s main residence since 1 April 2026, so the bill is doubled. A home that qualifies for business rates pays those instead.
Planning in Ramsgate
We found no Thanet planning policy or Article 4 direction aimed at short lets. Thanet’s Article 4 directions in the Ramsgate, Ramsgate Marina extension and Pegwell conservation areas control small changes to listed addresses, such as windows, doors and porches. The council is consulting on its new Local Plan until 9 October 2026, so this is one to watch.
Rules across England
England's short-let register is due by March 2027, a home let for at least 70 nights a year (and available for 140) pays business rates instead of council tax, and the furnished holiday lettings tax regime ended in April 2025. Read our guide to the rules
Yes. Since 1 April 2026, Thanet District Council has charged a 100% premium on furnished homes that are nobody’s main residence, so the bill is doubled. A home that meets the business-rates tests for holiday lets pays business rates instead.
We found no Thanet planning policy or Article 4 direction aimed at short lets, and England has no general planning requirement for them outside London. Some homes in Ramsgate’s conservation areas are covered by Article 4 directions, so changes to their windows, doors or porches can need permission.

Yes. The Culture Secretary told Parliament in September 2026 that England’s short-let register will be up and running in full “by March”, which has been reported as March 2027. Every host will need to register, and we do it for you.
Homes by the Royal Harbour suit weekend breaks and sailing visitors. Homes near the station suit commuters and contractors, and East Cliff near Main Sands suits families in summer.
Summer, with Ramsgate Week in late July, Broadstairs Folk Week in August and the school holidays on the beaches. Port, hospital and contractor stays keep weekdays going through the year, and insurance stays peak in winter.
