Abertillery at a glance

Short lets in Abertillery, in brief

Abertillery is a working valley town, and most of its guests come for work. Crews on coal tip and drainage works, hospital staff and people working at the Ebbw Vale Enterprise Zone fill the week. Steelhouse Festival in July and the parks and hills around the valley bring the leisure stays.

Why Abertillery works

Who books a short let in Abertillery

Construction crews

Construction is one of our biggest sources of bookings around Abertillery. Crews on coal tip, drainage and road works across Blaenau Gwent book a whole home for the length of a job, with parking and one invoice.

Insurance stays

When a home in Abertillery, Cwmtillery or Llanhilleth is damaged by a burst pipe, fire or flood, the insurer pays for the family to stay nearby while it is repaired, often for weeks or months. Pets are welcome at our home here, and these stays peak in winter.

Coal tip safety works

Blaenau Gwent has 129 disused coal tips. After a tip slipped above Cwmtillery during Storm Bert in November 2024, the Welsh Government funded new drainage and slope works there. It is also paying for maintenance on more than 400 tips across Wales from 2026 to 2029.

Ysbyty Aneurin Bevan and the Grange

Aneurin Bevan University Health Board employs over 14,000 staff. Ysbyty Aneurin Bevan in Ebbw Vale has a minor injury unit, and the Grange University Hospital is its specialist and critical care centre.

Ebbw Vale Enterprise Zone

Forty hectares of development land across eight sites around Ebbw Vale and Tredegar, home to manufacturers including GS Yuasa, Continental Teves and PCI Pharma.

Steelhouse Festival

A rock festival held on top of a Welsh mountain above the valleys, now in its fifteenth year. The next one starts on Friday 23 July 2027.

Short lets, explained

How a short let fills the week in Abertillery

A long let pays one rent. A short let is booked by the night or the week, so it can take a work stay in the week and a leisure stay at the weekend, and price each night for the demand.

  • Priced for every night, not once a year
  • Longer stays fill the quieter months
  • One payout and one statement each month

If your home would earn more as a long let, we will tell you.

Local rules

The rules in Abertillery, handled

What applies to a home in Abertillery, and what we do about each one. Last checked September 2026.

Register with the Welsh Revenue Authority

Everyone in Wales taking bookings of 31 nights or less must register. Registration opens in October 2026, and existing providers must register by 31 March 2027. It is free, and we do it for you. Rules across Wales and England

The visitor levy

Welsh councils can choose to charge a visitor levy of £1.30 per person per night on self-catering. Blaenau Gwent is not charging it, only Cardiff has chosen to so far, and any council must give 12 months’ notice.

Council tax or business rates

In Wales a home must be available for 252 days and let for 182 to pay business rates. Otherwise council tax applies, and Blaenau Gwent has charged a 100% premium on second homes since 1 April 2026. The Welsh Government is consulting on changes from April 2027.

Licensing on the way

The Development of Tourism and Regulation of Visitor Accommodation (Wales) Act 2026 brings in licensing, expected from 2029 once the standards are published. We keep your home ready for it.

Planning in Abertillery

Wales has separate use classes for main homes, second homes and short lets, and moving between them needs no permission unless a council makes an Article 4 direction. We found none in Blaenau Gwent, whose two conservation areas are both in Tredegar.

Yes. Everyone in Wales taking bookings of 31 nights or less must register with the Welsh Revenue Authority, whether or not a levy applies. Registration opens in October 2026, and existing providers must register by 31 March 2027.
Not at present. As of September 2026, Blaenau Gwent Council is not charging the visitor levy, and only Cardiff has chosen to. If a council adopts one, the rate for self-catering is £1.30 per person per night, with 12 months’ notice.
Wales has separate use classes for main homes (C3), second homes (C5) and short lets (C6). Moving between them is permitted unless a council makes an Article 4 direction, and we found none in Blaenau Gwent.
A self-catering home pays business rates if it is available for 252 days and let for 182 days a year. Otherwise council tax applies, and Blaenau Gwent has charged a 100% premium on second homes since 1 April 2026.
The town centre suits crews and families on longer stays. Llanhilleth suits guests travelling by train to Cardiff, and Blaina, Nantyglo and Brynmawr suit crews working along the A465.
Mostly people working: crews on coal tip, drainage and road works, NHS staff at Ysbyty Aneurin Bevan and the Grange, engineers at the Ebbw Vale Enterprise Zone, and families on insurance stays. Steelhouse Festival brings a busy weekend each July.
A percentage of what each booking pays out: 15% + VAT on bookings from the booking sites, and 5% + VAT more on bookings that come direct to us. There is a one-off setup fee, and photography is priced separately, both agreed with you before anything starts. Guests pay for cleaning.
Yes. Whether you call it Airbnb management, co-hosting, holiday-let or serviced accommodation management, we run the whole thing: listings on Airbnb, Booking.com and other sites, pricing, guests, cleaning and maintenance. We take work and contractor stays as well as holidays.
